The school wanted to provide a covered walkway to protect the children moving from building to building in wet weather. The canopy needed to span around several buildings at different angles and various styles of building.
Problem solving with the canopy design
The walkway needed to overcome window and door openings, awkward angles on the building, underground services and drainage. Part of the walkway was against a modern cladded building and other sections were against a large brick building, so it was clear that the canopy would need to be freestanding and wall mounted at different stages.
Choosing the right product
The product needed to be flexible and able to sweep around corners and various angles in the walkway. This is why Connekt was chosen. As the project was of significant importance to the school, various committees had to sign off on the expenditure. It was clear that Connekt was the best product available to provide the tailored solution. The price was more than the other quotations received, but as the product offered the best solution to their requirements so the higher cost was easily justified.
Installing the canopy
The canopy installation was completed during the summer holidays due to its complexity; this also allowed us to work freely with machinery and get concrete delivered to site. After installation, the schools added lighting and security cameras to ensure the canopy can be used safely and effectively all year round. Interesting facts about the canopy
The canopy has no supporting posts at the front which maximises the area around the school offering footfall traffic free movement. The freestanding linkways allow movement from building to building under cover all year round. The canopy can be extended to incorporate additional links at a later date, which have already been quoted for. The key for the school was to find the right solution with the right contractor to undertake such a large project.
