Installing mortuary entrance canopies at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital.

Background

This project was for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust. We were asked to provide entrance canopies for the mortuaries at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital. The NHS Trust needed to make the mortuaries safe for visitors.

The requirement

The hospitals needed to allow bereaved visitors into the mortuaries but with safe restrictions in place. The process involves holding visitors outside until they are escorted in by a member of staff. To provide shelter for waiting visitors, they needed covered outdoor entrances on each site.

Challenges

The canopies were straight forward to design and install. Having installed thousands of similar canopies at hospitals and healthcare centres, including for the same client, we knew what was needed.

It was important the canopies would keep the areas free from obstruction for ease of use. The client was aware of the benefits of our Connekt canopy and knew the design would be cantilevered and free from supporting posts which could get in the way.

The solution

We provided a Connekt canopy fixed to the masonry of the building on each hospital. The Trust’s project team already knew they wanted to use this product having previously had them installed in other locations.

The new canopies are colour-matched to each building, one site with a brown colour scheme and the other with NHS blue. The Trust can now keep visitors safe and dry outside the mortuaries as part of the distanced process.
