New Collaborative Learning Trust – Redscope Primary School

We worked with New Collaborative Learning Trust and Redscope Primary School to install a freestanding playground canopy, giving children a sheltered space to play and learn outdoors.

Background

Redscope Primary School wanted to make better use of their playground by adding cover that would work in all weathers. Without any shelter in place, outdoor playtime and learning opportunities were often cut short when the weather turned, and children were missing out on time outside.

The trust was looking for a practical way to provide shade and shelter so the playground could be used reliably all year round.

The requirement

The school needed a canopy that would:

  • Provide weather protection for the playground
  • Create a space for outdoor play in all conditions
  • Double up as an outdoor teaching area for small groups
  • Be installed during the summer holidays

The canopy had to be practical enough for everyday playground use while also giving teachers a sheltered spot for outdoor learning sessions.

The challenge

We were working to a fairly quick turnaround on this one. The project came in at short notice, which meant we had to keep things moving to get the survey completed, the canopy manufactured and the installation finished during the summer holidays.

It meant keeping things moving at every stage to make sure we didn’t run into the new term.

The solution

We visited the site to look at the space and discuss what would work best. The school had a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve, and after going through the practicalities and costs, a freestanding Connekt Colosseum canopy made the most sense.

The finished structure measures 10m x 5m and sits on six ground posts and a bright blue finish, giving plenty of covered space in the playground. Because it’s freestanding, the school had flexibility over where to position it for maximum use.

Results

Redscope Primary School now has a go-to outdoor area that doesn’t depend on the weather. The children have somewhere to play when it’s wet or sunny, which means outdoor time isn’t constantly being cut short.

It’s also become a useful teaching space. Staff can take small groups outside for lessons knowing they’ve got proper cover, which has opened up more opportunities for outdoor learning.

We got everything wrapped up during the summer break as planned, so the canopy was there and ready to use from the first day back. The canopy’s now a well-used part of the playground that’s helping the school make the most of their outdoor space throughout the year.
