Background
Brinsworth Academy had a courtyard in the middle of the school that wasn't being used. The space was overgrown and difficult to access, which meant it was sitting empty while students needed more places to spend their breaks and lunchtimes.
The trust saw an opportunity to turn this neglected area into something useful – a bright, sheltered spot where students could sit, eat and socialise outdoors.
The requirement
The project meant completely revamping the courtyard. The trust wanted to:
- Clear the overgrown space
- Install paving to create a useable outdoor area
- Add a canopy for year-round weather protection
- Have everything ready before students returned in September
The canopy needed to cover outdoor benches and provide both shade and shelter, making the space practical for everyday use.
The challenge
The biggest challenge was timing. The project came through at short notice, and everything had to be completed before the start of the new school year.
We also had to coordinate carefully with the groundworking contractor who was clearing and resurfacing the courtyard. Our foundations needed to be scheduled alongside their paving work to make sure everything lined up properly.
On top of that, the courtyard sits in the middle of the school building with limited access. All materials had to be carried into the area by hand, which required careful planning and a bit of extra effort from the team.
The solution
Our surveyor Stephen Wruk met with the director of the trust to talk through what they needed and explore the options. After understanding their requirements and budget, we recommended a freestanding Connekt Colosseum canopy.
We installed a 15m x 7.5m structure supported by eight posts, creating a large covered area in the courtyard. The freestanding design meant the canopy could sit neatly in the space without needing to attach to the school buildings.
By working closely with the groundworks team and managing our schedule carefully, we made sure the foundations went in at the right time and the installation was completed before term started.

Results
The courtyard has gone from an overgrown, inaccessible space to a practical outdoor dining area that students can use every day. The canopy provides reliable shelter and shade, and the benches underneath can be used in all weathers.
The project was finished on time and ready for the new school year, giving Brinsworth Academy a valuable new space that makes better use of the school site. Students now have an extra place to spend their breaks and lunchtimes, helping ease pressure on indoor dining areas.
