The restaurant is named in memory of Alec’s late father who was a great influence on his career, and his grandfather, a fish porter at Billingsgate Market.
The restaurant sets out to provide simple, quality fresh food. Head Chef, Stephen Li, brings his knowledge and expertise from the most dynamic of kitchens. Although predominantly a seafood restaurant serving the finest fish and shellfish, mouth-watering meat dishes add to this impressive menu.
The venue is always full to capacity with advanced bookings a must. Alec contacted Canopies UK to see if we could help extend his dining space and seat more guests. The restaurant had an existing outdoor terrace balcony which was used by guests to grab some fresh air or as a place where smokers could go.
Alec wanted to better utilize this area but whatever system he went with it had to stand out from the competition, something that was the talk of the town, a real wow statement.
The terrace area had to accommodate disabled access to the restaurant. There was an existing ramp at the side of the restaurant which led to the terrace area and then entry from the terrace was through existing patio doors. The canopy being installed would have to take this into consideration and an access point would need to be specified at the canopy design stage.
The canopy also had to blend in with the rest of the building and its environment as planning approval was required before any work could start.
The restaurant opted for our new state-of-the art Cantabria canopy system. This is a system that really lends itself to the hospitality market, it’s main selling point is that it allows you to entertain guests in an outside environment 365 days a year. At the touch of a button you can close and open the roof and the sides – all independently with the total canopy closing in under 60 seconds.
With accessories ranging from heating to interior lighting and the option of having windows and doors the Cantabria was built specific to the customer’s requirements.
We were also able to build a disabled access door at the side of the canopy as part of the integral structure too, all of which was made easier by the initial site surveys and design. Matching screen fabrics helped the system blend into the main building.
We were able to provide initial drawings and designs to help the restaurant understand how the canopy would look. This also helped with the planning application process.
An extra space was created that is fully covered and can be used all-year round. The room itself is now a place where people want to dine and book tables, specifically on the terrace. It still enables guests to get the benefits of Al Fresco dining and the beautiful views, whilst at the touch of a button knowing they can be protected from a sudden change in weather.
