For many schools, dining outside is only a viable option during the summer months when the sun is shining. However, an outdoor dining canopy can help to solve this problem, providing children and staff with the freedom of eating outside all year long without having to worry about the weather.
There are a variety of options available to educational facilities but it can be tough to decide which one is the most suitable for your specific needs. Find out all you need to know below.
Which product is the most suitable for facilitating outside dining?
Whether you are looking for an extension to your existing dining area or a sheltered area in your playground or courtyard, there a number of versatile options available to you.
Canopies UKs systems are bespoke to each project and can either be installed on the side of a building, or built as a free standing structure away from the property.
The Cantabria is an ideal all-weather solution for educational facilities looking to extend their dining area or canteen, especially if located on an outside edge of the property.
Students can enjoy eating their meals shaded from the summer sun, and if the weather begins to worsen, the canopys retractable roof and wall sides can be extended providing protection from the rain, wind or snow.
There is a choice of two projections 4 metres or 6 metres – and, as the Cantabria is modular, the length is not an issue. The size of this specific canopy ensures that any additional seating needs are covered.
We recently installed a Cantabria system at Sir Stanley Mathews School. The school were looking to extend their dining area in order to maximise space and alleviate congestion at peak times.
The available space to work with was actually one of the main walkways at the rear of the school, making the Cantabrias retractable feature the perfect solution. The school was overjoyed with the results.
Installing a canopy to the side of your school will provide shelter to those underneath and act as an extension to your existing dining area/classroom space.
The Connekt design ensures that there are no posts for children to bump into, whilst maximising any available space for tables, chairs, and benches.
Additionally, this system is extremely adaptable and can be installed with fixed side shutters, giving you extra storage capacity or space for an outdoor classroom. This design has a maximum projection of 3.6m but thre is no limitation to length.
The Connekt system can also be free-standing in the school grounds, giving pupils a sheltered area to eat, socialise and relax. This can become a focal point at break and lunch times.
The maximum projection for the free standing design is 3.6 metres. However, if two canopies are installed back-to-back with the posts in the middle, the system would have a combined projection of 6 metres.
Are there any additional benefits to installing a canopy in an educational environment?
The space gained by having a canopy installed at your school presents teachers and students with a host of additional benefits, including protecting the school from adverse weather conditions to creating additional storage facilities.
The Cantabria perhaps offers the most additional benefits as it has been specifically designed to provide a multi-functional space. The fact that the Cantabria comes equipped with heaters and lighting automatically gives the potential for an additional classroom.
What accreditations do Canopies UK have that allow them to install a system in a school?
All of our installation staff are DBS checked (formerly CRB). We are also ISO9001 accredited and members of Construction Line and CHAS.
Each product is bespoke, verified by our in-house structural engineer and tested to ensure that they are safe when exposed to high wind speeds and heavy snow loads. This ensures that you are purchasing a canopy of the highest quality designed specifically to fulfil the needs of your school.
Can a canopy be installed at any education facility & do I need planning permission?
All of our canopy systems are suitable for education facilities, from pre-schools and nurseries to colleges and universities. Its useful to be aware of the available space around your property as this will dictate the size of the canopy and which system would be best for you.
Its also important to check if planning permission is required before commissioning any external work for your school, however we can advise on this if necessary.
