How we helped create additional outdoor space for year 10 and 11 students at Hurstmere School for boys
Hurstmere School is a well-established and respected school for boys based in Sidcup in Kent. A specialist Sports and Science Academy, Hurstmere provides enhanced sporting and educational opportunities to its students and members of the wider Bexley community.
The school’s Director of Studies approached us to install two canopies that would provide its Year 10 and 11 students with their own individual outdoor space, as the students prefer to be outside and indoor space is limited.
Due to the space restrictions, the installation involved having to work over a seating platform within the school’s Year 11 area. We overcame this challenge by using a specialist access platform, which enabled us to complete the installation.
We also had to ensure that the school’s identity was incorporated within the canopies. Thanks to our extensive colour range, we were able to offer red and white systems that compliment the existing building and fit with the school’s branding.
What’s more, as we were working within a PE area, we had to ensure that the site was free from any posts and obstructions at all times.
We recommended installing two cantilevered Connekt canopies that would be fixed directly to the main school building using brackets. We recommended this approach for two main reasons:
1. It would create the right amount of outdoor space required.
2. No space would be lost due to the installation, thanks to the fact cantilevered canopies do not require any front posts.
We wanted the school to be able to clearly visualise what the canopies would look like in-situ from the outset. Our in-house graphic designer superimposed an image on to photographs of the school building to show the client a true likeness of what the proposal would look like in reality. This really helped the school make their final decision and the right choice in choosing us to complete the work.
After the canopies had been installed, we went above and beyond by revisiting the site to increase the height of the second canopy, at the school’s request.
The canopies were installed within the agreed timescale, which was during the school holidays, instantly providing Hurstmere’s Year 10 and 11 students with valuable additional outdoor space. Since carrying out the work, the school has contacted us to install a third canopy.
